LGBTQ Youth Under Your Care

You are permitted to decide whether to accept and retain an individual child in your care. You are free to hold any beliefs you choose, but once you accept a child into your home, you have a legal responsibility to provide care to the child without discrimination on the basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, HIV status, or other protected categories. If you feel you lack knowledge about the LGBTQ community you can seek additional training or counseling with the goal of keeping the child in their home.

A change in living environment is traumatic for any child, so you should only request that a child be removed from your home as a last resort.
