Social Security

It is really important that you get your baby a Social Security number because you will need this number to get almost any benefit or service for your baby. You can request a Social Security number at the hospital after your baby is born.

When you give the hospital staff information for the baby’s birth certificate, they will ask you if you want to apply for a Social Security number for your baby. You should say yes because this is the easiest way for your baby to get a Social Security number.

You can get the application in one of three ways. You can download the application from the Social Security website, you can call the Social Security Administration at 1- (800) 772-1231 and ask for an application to be mailed to you, or you can get the application from your local Social Security office.

Once you have completed the application, you can apply in person or by mail. However, YOU MUST SUBMIT ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS WITH THE APPLICATION, so it is better to apply in person.

To apply in person, either parent can go to the nearest Social Security office with the baby’s birth certificate and a document proving your child’s identity (such as your baby’s health record or school record). You or the other parent will also need ID such as a California ID Driver’s license, school identification, passport etc…

If you would rather apply by mail, follow the instructions on the Social Security Administration website.
